Designed for one-handed operation. The SOFTT has two latches made of acetyl, a strong, lightweight alternative to metal, to secure the windlass (handle). While only using one is required for the tourniquet to be effective, the extra latch provides another option depending on the handle's position after tightening. This allows for the tourniquet to be applied without the assistance of another individual.

Aside from the benefit of self-application, the SOFTT is also useful to medics and first responders. The slight rigidity of the tourniquet makes it easy to apply to others. The strap can be released completely through the web clamp and then re-threaded, allowing for application to trapped limbs.

To apply the tourniquet, you simply slide it over your limb and pull the tail quickly. Once the slack is removed, you twist the handle until bleeding is controlled, and secure it in the latch. Finally, tighten the screw on the buckle to prevent accidental loosening. This entire process takes under fifteen seconds when applied yourself with one hand. The range of operation for the SOFTT is 9" to 36" before tightening.
